By choosing Poreč as a vacation destination, you are choosing a city with a rich and diverse history that dates back to prehistoric times. With each step in Poreč, you travel through the history of this fascinating city, which will undoubtedly leave an indelible impression on you. Picuga and the top of Sveta Anela were fortified settlements, from which the locals could defend themselves against the enemy. Later Greek records attest to a small fishing village that the Romans would turn into their Iulia Parentium colony. The ruins of rustic villas, ancient temples, and its urban core bear witness to the Roman Empire’s influence. Years of colonization and invasion of Pore followed, beginning with the Byzantine Empire and continuing with the Venetian Republic, Napoleon, and Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today, Poreč is the capital of Istria and the seat of the Istrian Parliament, as well as a city with a colorful history and beautiful scenery that offers every visitor authentic experiences that they will never forget.

Baredine Cave is a natural gemorphological monument with a depth of 132 meters and underground lakes with permanent groundwater discovered at the lowest depth. A ten-meter-long high curtain, a very realistic statue of Our Lady, the body of the milkmaid Milka, a sloping Pisa tower, and a snowman the torchbearer who became a trademark of this pit are among the most miraculous sigma forms. A tour of the pit is available, and tourists can walk through five halls to a depth of 60 meters. In addition to experiencing the wonderfully formed underground, visitors to Baredina can meet the underground fauna, particularly the cave olm (Proteus anguinus), an endemic animal that only lives in these karst areas. The long history of Poreč is engraved in the everyday life and culture of its residents. Many monuments are still used today for masses, concerts, exhibitions or other events that enrich the already dazzling local culture of the city. One of those monuments is definitely the gorgeous Istrian Assembly Hall that changed owners and purpose through history. Once a church and a monastery this fascinating building was built in the 5th century, bur more interestingly the ground floor has been turned into a wine cellar in which glass barrels have been installed and are protected to this day. Luxurious stucco and frescoes that decorate the ceiling, 25 meters long and 9 meters wide, have also been preserved in the hall of the Istrian Parliament. The stucco is the work of Bologna master Giuseppe Monteventia and will for sure take your breath away. Today, ceremonial sessions of the County Assembly are held in the Assembly Hall, as well as the musical event „Naš kanat je lip“ and the art exhibition „Annale“. More recently an early Christian floor mosaic was discovered in the courtyard of the Assembly, which just shows that Poreč is an inexhaustible source of interesting history and culture. Poreč is waiting for you to discover its beautiful scenery and history, while Boutique Hotel Melissa will provide you the best accommodation and make you feel like a true Porečanin.

Poreč, along with Pula, was the first Roman colony in Istria. To this day, it preserves the ancient layout of the streets and the remains of a Roman temple, and is known throughout the world for its sixth-century basilica. The Euphrasian Basilica is one of the best preserved early Christian structures and the best examples of early Byzantine architecture in the Mediterranean region. Because of its universal value and importance it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. Built during the time of Bishop Euphrasius in the 6th century it includes an atrium, baptistery, bishop’s palace and remains of sacral buildings dating from the 3rd to the 4th centuries. The greatest treasure of the Euphrasian basilica are the magnificent mosaics made of colorful stones that still keep their brightness and freshness even today.
